Fava Bean, Frog Island Nation
Fava Bean, Frog Island Nation
Fava Beans were a revelation to to us after we started growing them. They're cold-hardy, so they go in the soil early and thus, feed you early. Their shoots and flowers are stunning, and edible. The plants are compact, so they don't take up much space in the garden. And the beans are so tasty! We recommend you pick them as 'shelly beans'...which you do when the green pods have started to show each individual bean within. Or, to hear an expert tell you how to eat them, check out this interview Jordan conducted for his podcast, The Ruminant.
This variety is called Frog Island Nation. It's got great flavour and the beans take on a beautiful purple colour as they dry out.
Gardeners: these plants grow to 2-3' high and are fairly compact. Grow them 6" apart within a row, in rows 2.5-4' apart.
Packet: minimum 25 seeds
