Dry Pole Bean, Hidatsa Red
Dry Pole Bean, Hidatsa Red
A beautiful red bean whose origin is attributed to the the Hidatsa First Nation in the Missouri River Valley of North Dakota. A thin-skinned bean that cooks up really creamy and produces a nice pot liquor. It has a semi-bush habit and doesn’t climb as tall as other pole beans, but it will definitely want some trellising.
This is a pole bean, which means that it climbs like a vine. Ideally you'll provide a trellis or pole for it to climb; think about where it can be in your garden without shading out other crops! Or order some milling corn and plant one bean at the base of each corn plant. You'll want to give the corn 2-3 weeks' head start.
